A Boy And His Atom: The World's Smallest Movie

You're about to see the movie that holds the Guinness World Records™ record for the World's Smallest Stop-Motion Film (see how it was made at ). The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. A movie made with atoms. Learn more about atomic memory, data storage and big data at

Isn't it insane how we can even bend the very fabric of the universe, the very fabric of things as we know it, to our will? Isn't it insane how far we've come as a species, a mere animal on a miraculously habitable planet? It boggles my mind that these are atoms, actual atoms, doing these things. Actual atoms that in my mind have always been something humans could see but not control, have been controlled.

PHOSFINE 1 месяц назад

Mark Martin 1
The background is also made of atoms. The difference is that the boy, and his atom, are molecules made of pairs of atoms. They rest on top of the background and stick up a little higher. The instrument which makes the pictures is a special kind of microscope which measures force between the atoms and a very small metal probe. The parts sticking up higher register more force than the more distant ones in the background, so their image is stronger.

Barbed Two You said, it's not atoms. If you really meant It *is* atoms , then why not say as much? You can't accurately educate people with an inaccurate explanation.
Barbed Two 1 месяц назад
Mark Martin that is what I was attempting to say but I wanted to attempt to keep it simple for the suspected lay unscientific mind
Mark Martin 1
Barbed Two They're too small to scatter waves of light with lengths large enough not to ionize them. This isn't imaged from light; it's imaged by mapping the voltage between the surface of a sample and an extremely small probe tip (a Scanning Tunneling Microscope) A carbon monoxide molecule is only two atoms. Imaging a single CO molecule is approximately the same as imaging one atom of either carbon or oxygen. This sort of microscope is used routinely to image the distribution of individual atoms on sample surfaces.
Barbed Two 1 месяц назад
Brendan Maller it's not atoms, atoms are to small for waves to bounce off them, it also says in the description that it's carbon monoxide molecules which are much bigger than atoms

A scanning tunneling microscope uses a needle with a tip sharpened to a single atom in order to see atoms by detecting their electrons. Because atoms are smaller than the wavelength of light, it is impossible to actually see atoms, much less protons and neutrons (remember that most of the space that atoms take up is actually empty space). The best we can do is poke around with a STM, which is comparable to a blind person trying to see by poking a stick in front of them.

Yeah but the protons are extremely dense and most of an atom's volume is from the electrons orbitting around it. Basically, I don't understand how the atoms are so close together,
PyrosaurusRex 4 месяца назад
Electrons are so incredibly small that you would probably have to zoom in 1,000 times to see them, not 100. What you are seeing is mostly the nucleus of the atom, made of protons and neutrons.

1) This is STM, you don't see atoms, you measure the local density of states, which affects the tunneling current. The substrate appears flat as the scanning tip is measuring at bigger height, so that it only detects the atoms which bulge out of the surface. But you still see the waves around them - that is the signal from the surface. 2) Because it's done in ultra high vacuum.
